(1965) Lives in Lisbon
"António Júlio Duarte has been photographing Casino’s lobbies in Macau for the last 10 years. Shot at night, with a medium format camera and a flash, often in jetlagged mode, the lobbies became Duarte’s personal territory. The absurd luxury of the places combined with the strangeness of the
objects, and the absence of human presence, creates a strong dreamlike
feeling. We are led through a labyrinth, as if floating. The work is, both an
important document about the little seen reality of Casino’s in Macau
today, and a very personal reflection about East and West, about how to relate to the world through photography."
White Noise, the most recent book by portuguese photographer Antonio Julio Duarte is published by Pierre von Kleist . Photographs from White Noise series have never been exhibited before. Food For Your Eyes Gallery is very pleased to presents a selection from the beautiful and haunting photographs from White Noise series by Antonio Julio Duarte at Nofound Photo Fair, November 16-19.
"Shooting medium format film with a harsh flash, Duarte tempers the casinos' decadent absurdity with the aesthetic of a tourist's snapshot, placing his own humanity in the pictures as well. It's interesting to see where Duarte's eye goes as he enters the grand lobbies, walks the eerily empty corridors, or encounters a flock of ceramic waterbirds lifting off from a lake of glass. He's a person in this story too." from Macau Glittering Menacingly, White Noise review by John Mahoney in American Photo
